People who come to see me are typically suffering. They may be confused, anxious, depressed, or more often than not they have specific complaints. They may be suffering from recently losing a loved one, experiencing conflict in their relationships (child-parent, parent-child, spouse, siblings, co-workers), or therapy has failed them. Often, part of the suffering is that they can't articulate the pain, it is resistant to language. It can lead to destructive behaviors; verbal aggression, ruminating thoughts on the past, worry thoughts about the future, self harm, suicide attempts, eating disorders, sleep difficulties, an inability to control ones emotions, or other behaviors. Experience has taught me that individuals have life events that they have yet to tell; maybe they have not yet found the words. When we do not yet have the words to tell our stories this can affect our dreams, trigger new symptoms, or lead to unintended and problematic behaviors. My role as a therapist is to assist others in changing their behaviors, gaining strength and confidence, and then finding a way of telling their stories. My practice is based on my training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Prolonged Exposure. I am currently a member of a DBT team.
