It is a gift to have someone share their emotional self, and an honor to accompany them on their journey of growth. This statement summarizes my approach to practicing mental health counseling for the last 30 years. Entering counseling takes courage and the strength to be vulnerable; my goal is to help harness this courage to facilitate growth and encourage healthy change. Change is often scary and is greeted by resistance, so an environment must be provided which will enhance therapeutic success. I believe that prescribing to one therapeutic approach limits the client's progress, remembering their unique life experiences. To accompany the client on a journey to establish healthier coping mechanisms in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment. Introducing communication skills to provide a method of direct communication. Educating addiction clients to develop positive coping mechanisms which allows them to investigate the core issues that drive their substance abuse. Having an eclectic theoretical approach, I am able to utilize the appropriate therapeutic gendre. This presents the client with various options to put into action which allows them to develop insight and handle issues they discover in therapy. Direct and gentle confrontation are two important factors in my counseling style.
