In choosing a therapist, ask someone trusted, but remember they have their own biases. Consider someone State Licensed and check their complaint or malpractice history. Inquire about negotiating a "self pay fee", your therapist will work for you, not your insurance company. Look for someone older with more life experience than you. Look for someone who is a parent, is married or has experienced divorce, has lived with grief or watched their own parents age. Request an initial consultation session and ask about professional experience and certifications. Remember, the therapist relationship fit is most important to counseling success. lastly, listen to your conscience, I graduated from Syracuse University, licensed in Florida as Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have 25 years experience working with individuals, couples and families, specializing in anxiety, depression, grief and relationship counseling specializing in couples considering divorce or wanting reconciliation. I am a Gottman trained relationship therapist, certified divorce/family mediator and EMDR trauma therapist People contact a therapist because they face a difficult situation. Change is needed but they are unsure how. For many, the past is troubling. Ending a relationship is traumatic and not always the best solution. Many, especially children are no happier after divorce. Why not talk it out and see if it will work.
