Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse Recognizing the signs and symptoms of substance abuse is integral in determining the most appropriate treatment for an individual. Depending on the substance being abused, the signs and symptoms of substance abuse can vary. Some indicators that would infer a person is abusing drugs or alcohol can include poor decision-making skills leading a person to engage in risky behaviors, slurred speech, loss of coordination, and the inability to focus or pay attention. Furthermore, the ongoing abuse of drugs and/or alcohol can cause an individual to isolate him or herself from friends and loved ones, be unable to fulfill responsibilities, be absent from work, or have increased interaction with law enforcement. Identifying these signs and symptoms and reporting them to a mental health professional can ensure that an individual struggling with chemical dependency issues receives the most appropriate treatment to meet their needs. Treatment Options at Delta Medical Center For individuals struggling with an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, Delta Medical Center offers state-of-the-art substance abuse treatment options and programs to meet the needs of patients grappling with chemical dependency concerns. After completing thorough medical and psychiatric assessments, the most appropriate level of care is determined. Individuals who require detoxification from substances can engage in Delta's medically-supervised detox program. This program allows am individual to go through the process of withdrawal in a safe and comfortable environment before taking part in one of Delta's other programs. It is also during this stage of treatment that medication may be recommended to help alleviate unpleasant symptoms of withdrawal or those associated with an identified mental illness or illnesses. Following detox, patients working to overcome addiction can take part in Delta's Dual Diagnosis Inpatient Program. In this program, patients engage in individual, group, and family therapies that foster healing and lasting recovery from substances. Upon completion of this program, patients can then continue treatment in Delta's Intensive Outpatient or Partial Hospitalization Programs.
