Finding the courage to discuss personal private matters can be a challenge. Many clients have worries about how they will be perceived in therapy; or if they will be able to find a counselor they can trust to feel comfortable sharing their personal feelings. I believe creating a safe non-judgemental therapeutic environment is essential for the process of change to occur in counseling. By working together with my clients we develop goals for change. Throughout the change process clients become more skilled at replacing negative unproductive thoughts, feelings and behaviors and implementing positive, more productive ones. Problems do not go away unless they are addressed and reexamined. Challenges can be better managed with more effective parenting, communication and boundary setting skills. Working towards developing these skills can be the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.
