I see a primary goal of psychotherapy as providing the individual with a sense of empowerment: the belief that you are able to control your own thoughts and actions and through that interact more effectively in social, personal, and occupational arenas. Therapy begins with establing a supportive therapeutic relationship, in which one feels accepted and validated. The specific methods I use vary depending on the nature of the problem and the needs of the client. I have a semi-structured program that I use with chronic pain patients, addressing cognitive and behavioral aspects of pain management and employing specific techniques such as relaxation procedures and hypnosis. I also use a specific set of techniques to treat panic and anxiety disorders. I work fairly closely with local pain management clinics, providing both evaluative and therapeutic services. I also evaluate and treat both childhood and adult ADHD. I employ hypnosis, when indicated, for chronic pain management, certain anxiety disorders, and smoking cessation and weight loss.
