In beginning a therapy, I first try to create an environment that is non-judgmental and accepting. Comfort and trust are indispensable for developing a strong working relationship in psychotherapy. During the course of therapy, I try to help identify and explore problem areas at face value at the time they are presented. I also stay attuned to dimensions of personal struggles that are not readily apparent. My therapeutic style is to be thoughtful and considered, but also present, engaged and interactive. As therapy progresses, I try to present choices as to which potential direction the process could take. I encourage and assist my clients in actively participating in their individual treatment. I completed my doctoral training in clinical psychology at the University of Michigan in 1978. Unlike many other psychologists, I have extensive training and experience in the treatment of chemical dependency in a variety of in-patient and out-patient settings. During my 30-plus years in private practice, I have worked with individuals, couples and late adolescents. The problems I most commonly see include difficulties with intimate relationships, depression, anxiety, the experience of trauma and chemical dependency.
