Over the past 20+ years I've worked together with clients as they develop new ways to live with the challenges they face. It's been a privilege to do so. Anxiety, sadness, lonliness, lowered self-esteem, and difficulties in relationships all can interfere with the lives we hope to live. I work to understand the way these difficulties have developed and how these function in daily life. Then, together with the client, I use symptom focused and short-term treatments to address the difficulties within the larger context of their meaning in each client's life. Some anxiety has a valuable capacity to mark experience and help us avoid risk. However, I work very hard to help patients with the outsized, habitual anxiety and depression that cause suffering: anxiety that lessens the ability to engage fully in meaningful work and loving relationships. I view all clients from a developmental perspective, informed by psychodynamic theory and also by current research into best practices for psychotherapists including cognitive and relational treatments. I have found that these different theoretical approaches integrate into a caring and comprehensive approach to treatment.
