Let's face it, the world is not an easy place to survive. We all have our own experiences, some better than others, that affect the way we interact with others. Not only do we bring our past experiences into current relationships, be it romantic or platonic, but those experiences also influence the way we interact with others, including our children. Based on my experience working with both adults and children, the best way to address family issues is to begin at the top. I like to work with adults to address the past to better function in the future. I work from a system perspective, which means I account for the impact of inner struggles of the individual, and the context from which that person lives. Age, gender, socioeconomic status, and race all have an influence on mental health, and it is important that these factors are not ignored. Working with parents is essential in addressing the overall mental health of a family. While parenting suggestions can be helpful, I work with parents from a deeper perspective that addresses their life experiences and the effect those experiences have on overall family functioning.
