I have worked primarily with gay men, beginning in the 1980s. I have continued to work with individuals and couples coping with illness, death and bereavement - and the existential and psychodynamic issues that they present. I am particularly interested in working with mid-life and older gay men, including those dealing with illness and those interested in life review. Of course, I also work with men and women of all ages who want to explore psychotherapy as a way to make some changes. My training has been primarily psychodynamic, which I rely on as a theoretical orientation along with cognitive and behavioral approaches. I believe the solution to current problems/emotional distress is sometimes rooted in developmental experiences - seeing ways the same problems keep getting repeated. I have an interactive approach to therapy; I don't "just listen." Therapy is not about discovering what is wrong with you. It is about what might be causing suffering, about gaining insight into what contributes to repetition/re-enactment. Cognitive techniques, mindfulness and the therapy relationship are used to increase internal contentment and pleasure. The goal of therapy is optimal functioning - becoming one's best self.
