People come to me for help with a range of difficulties: Some have problems with relationships, work or school; others are reacting to stress or going through a difficult period in their lives. Many are troubled by anxiety, depression or other unhappy feelings, or feel blocked from being effective and comfortable at work or at home. Often they have tried treatment before, without success. I collaborate with each person to evaluate his or her needs carefully, and tailor therapy to that individual. For some people brief therapy is best, for others it takes longer. Therapy aimed at achieving deep self-understanding is often very effective for relieving problems and stresses, and for maximizing the potential for love, work and play. Effective therapy requires kindness, understanding, confidentiality, and respect for the person's autonomy and abilities, as well as skill and knowledge. I have practiced and taught psychotherapy for many years, giving me a breadth and depth of experience. I often serve as a consultant to psychologists, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts, and am currently on the faculties of the University of Miami's Department of Psychiatry and the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute.
