Signs and Symptoms of Depression Depression is an illness that affects the mind, body, and thoughts in such a way that it interferes with all aspects of an individual's daily life. This disorder can impact the way a person eats, sleeps, feels about him or herself, and thinks about the world around them. Individuals with depression are not just having a bad day, they can't simply pull themselves together and get better. Without getting proper treatment the symptoms of depression can last for weeks, months, or even years. The signs and symptoms of depression can include loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed, loss of appetite, loss of emotional expression, persistently sad, anxious, or empty. Those with depression also tend to have feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness. Additionally, individuals with depression tend to social withdrawal from friends and family, have trouble concentrating, and experience persistent physical problems such as headaches, digestive disorders, or chronic pain. In severe cases of depression an individual may engage in self-harming behaviors and have thoughts of suicide. Treatment for Depression Treatment for depression usually includes medication management as well as the implementation of various therapeutic methodologies. However, there is no one-size-fits all approach to treatment, which is why most programs will tailor treatment options to meet each client's specific needs. When you arrive at Highland Ridge we will have you complete a thorough evaluation that will help our treatment team fully understand the trouble you are facing and to get a bigger picture of the severity of your depression. With the results of the evaluation you will sit down with your treatment team to develop a recovery plan based on your specific needs.
