My orientation is family systems, which means even when there is only one person in my office, I view that person in the context of emotional systems in which he or she is embedded–family, work, friendships–and try to help the person recognize forces that are acting upon them. What are the "rules" of those systems? What expectations did someone grow up with, for example, around marriage and family? What lessons were learned about sexuality and religion, about work and play, fitting in vs. going one's own way, and all the other challenges and choices that life presents? My style is active and straightforward. I encourage clients to think about therapy as an educational process in which they are hiring me–and potentially firing me--as a consultant to help them understand better what's happening in their lives and how they can have more control over it. I work collaboratively, trying to minimize the power differential that often exists between provider and consumer, and I focus on strengths and values, hopefully helping clients to recognize what might be preventing them from becoming more who they want to be.
