To me, the most important things I do as a psychologist are to listen to you carefully and attentively; and to respond in such a way that you feel heard and understood on a deep level. Many people come to psychotherapy feeling their problems or symptoms don't make sense, leaving them feeling worried or discouraged. In our meetings, we will discuss your feelings and experiences, so you can learn more about what you do feel, and how your feelings do in fact make sense, given what you've been through in your life. There are no guarantees about psychotherapy, but as you become more aware of your feelings and responses to various relational situations, you will be in a better position to know what you need and to discover new ways to get your needs met and to handle situations and relationships. Many people who work with me grow in self-understanding and self-acceptance. Their lives feel more productive, meaningful and satisfying. Their symptoms become less intense. They learn to view symptoms as signals that something needs attention, rather than as a character flaw or as something they can't change.
