I've been practicing art therapy in the Atlanta area for nearly 18 years now, and have found it to be a most powerful process in helping people to deal with their issues. The creative process is unmatched in accessing the deepest needs or problems within an individual, couple, group or family. Although I take many clients with differing problems, my specialties are in treating women who were sexually abused as children, trauma issues, and end of life issues/death/terminal illness. Currently my client list incorporates many issues, such as domestic violence, divorce, depression, anxiety. I approach therapy from a Christian perspective. Art Therapists are trained very similarly to other therapists, and then we specialize in the art process. This process is not concerned with how good an artist a client is, the art itself is a modality, a tool which the therapist and client use for resolution and healing. Art/creativity is multi-faceted. It can include drawing, painting, sculpting, but also may be expressed as storytelling, journaling, certain behavioral modalities in visual form, in essence, anything that the human mind/heart can create. These are all non-threatening exercises, and do not require any artistic talent.
