Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse In most cases, individuals who are abusing substances will do all that they can to keep their use a secret. Yet, as a person's use continues to increase, the more difficult it will become for him or her to keep the behavior a secret. Behaviorally, individuals who are abusing substances may go through episodes of extreme hyperactivity or extreme lethargy, they may have sudden, unprovoked, aggressive outbursts, or they may suddenly cease participating in activities that they once thoroughly enjoyed. These people may display a drop in performance at work or school and may begin failing to take care of other daily responsibilities. People who use drugs and/or alcohol will often have dramatic mood swings, become easily irritated and short-tempered, and may act fearful or paranoid without reason. Additionally, their sleeping and eating patterns are likely to change, they may experience lapses in memory, disorientation, or excessive confusion. There are also many physical changes that may become apparent when a person is abusing substances. These changes will vary depending on the type of substance that is being used but can include things such as impaired coordination, slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, tremors, and excessive nausea.
