Movement in therapy encourages an individual to more physically active for mental and physical reasons in their own lives. It may help a person get "unstuck" when confronting difficult issues and bring about dramatic shifts in thinking about their lives. Walking side by side surrounded by visual distractions like trees, water and the sun may allow for a more comfortable interaction between the patient and the practitioner. There is something very comforting about going through physical movement together, as well as working with the measurable biophysical response in the body that occurs with exercise. Additionally, many people associate being outdoors with recreation and vacation, two very positive experiences. I will take talk therapy to the outdoors where we can breathe, move, and talk through whatever you are struggling with. Research shows that movement has a positive impact on personal well-being. My sessions with patients focus on combining counseling with walking.
