Performing Arts Therapeutic Boarding School Lava Heights Academy sees the artistic process as one that is essentially therapeutic, developing, and improving when guided appropriately. We see expressive and/or creative arts therapies, arts in education, and artistic training as an integrated and complimentary path to discovering and strengthening personal, family, and community identity and relationships. Lava Heights is a facility where an adolescent residential treatment center, a fine arts academy, and an accredited secondary education program are merged into one dynamic program. Our Statement To provide our students with the highest quality mental health treatment, academic education, and artistic training in complete integration. To place the mental, emotional, and physical needs of our students as our top priority. To maintain a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for our students and employees. To conduct ourselves as professionals in appearance, demeanor, and intent. To enncourage all employees to work in a collaborative way, and to provide our students with positive role models. To advocate for the power of the arts in changing lives. Expressive Therapies We believe that through creative expression and the tapping of the imagination, a person can examine the body, feelings, emotions and his or her thought process. However, expressive arts therapy is its own therapeutic discipline, an inter-modal discipline where the therapist and client move freely between drawing, dancing, music, drama, and poetry. Although often separated by the form of creative art, some expressive therapists consider themselves intermodal, using expression in general, rather than a specific discipline to treat clients, altering their approach based on the clients' needs, or through using multiple forms of expression with the same client to aid with deeper exploration.[2] Expressive arts therapy is the practice of using imagery, storytelling, dance, music, drama, poetry, movement, horticulture, dreamwork, and visual arts together, in an integrated way, to foster human growth, development, and healing. It is about reclaiming our innate capacity as human beings for creative expression of our individual and collective human experience in artistic form. Expressive arts therapy is also about experiencing the natural capacity of creative expression and creative community for healing
