My approach is to listen to what you say in order to get a sense of what is bothering you, and of your life as you see it and as you long for it to be, and, I will note what you don't say in order to discover patterns that may keep you stuck. I will work with you to understand your particular problem, to get at what it is about, but ultimately to understand you, because no one problem can be truly understood outside of the context that is your life. Change is fundamentally difficult and threatening, so in order for any attempt at change to be successful the forces that perpetuate unconscious patterns must be understood. The first step in that process is realizing that the primary obstacles to change are within you. This is the essential internal conflict. I am a psychoanalyst in addition to being a psychologist. Hence I may recommend an analysis as the most beneficial treatment. Even when that is not the case analytic thinking shapes the way I do all of my work.
