Signs & Symptoms of Developmental Disorders The category of developmental disorders includes conditions that originate in childhood and are characterized by impairments in a person's ability to function in personal, academic, social, and/or occupational settings. The impact of developmental disorders can vary widely, from a specific limitation in one area, such as learning or executive functioning, to a comprehensive deficiency in areas such as social skills and intelligence. Types of developmental disorders include autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, and sensory processing disorder. To be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a person must exhibit deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction, developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, and at least two types of repetitive behavior patterns. Asperger syndrome was previously considered to be a subcategory of autism and is now included within the definition of autism spectrum disorder. Intellectual disabilities are characterized by deficits in intellectual functioning and adaptive functioning. Sensory processing disorder, or SPD, occurs when a person's brain struggles to correctly interpret information related to light, sound, taste, touch, and/or smell. Treatment Options at StoneCrest Center At StoneCrest Center, we are dedicated to working closely with patients and their families to ensure the treatment process is as efficient and effective as possible. Potential patients must complete an assessment process that includes nursing assessments, psychiatric evaluations, psychosocial assessments, nutritional assessments, and any additional assessments that are needed to address current concerns. Treatment services at StoneCrest Center are organized according to the age of the patient. Our Foundations program provides a range of therapeutic interventions for adolescents. Adults ages 18 to 54 are treated in our Restorations program and seniors, ages 55 and above, receive short-term inpatient care through our Generations program. Services in all three of these programs include individual, group, and family therapy sessions that are specifically designed to meet the unique needs and challenges of each patient in ways that are appropriate to their age and developmental levels. All StoneCrest patients also have the opportunity to participate in recreation and expressive arts therapy, and our treatment professionals work closely with family members to help them understand the challenges that their loved ones are facing, and to prepare them to provide the support that their loved ones will need when they return home.
