Relationships and transitions often involve loss, grief and sadness. The diagnostic terms we use - anxiety, depression, difficulty coping - are an attempt to make understandable the pain and suffering that our clients and patients experience. Counseling and psychotherapy, and I use the tems synonymously, should enable the relief of the sadness and anxiety that are part of managing symptoms. The primary theoretical orientations - interpersonal, cognitive behavioral, and psychodynamic - that I use and in which I have been trained and educated - are always infused by and with the essential and core qualities of empathy, understanding, warmth, and genuiness. I treat couples and individuals. All couples become 'gridlocked," defensive, and frustrated. Men may 'stonewall,' while women pursue their concerns. I help couples by emphasizing 'repair' skills that enable them to de-escalate tension. Individual therapy, centered on anxiety, depression, and relational discord, can facilitate cognitive and behavioral change. I believe that every human life has dignity, worth, and value, and that, with proper treatment, a 'facilitative environment' can be created in psychotherapy that allows healing and relief from suffering. I have an attunement to, and empathy for and sensitivity to the gender and cultural concerns of clients/patients.
