As you search for the right therapist, I recommend looking for certain essential qualities: Close and empathic listening - do you feel heard? Seasoned knowledge and technique - do you feel understood and responded to helpfully? A good "fit" - do you feel comfortable with this person? It is impossible to discern these qualities from a profile alone. You may need to allow yourself a couple of sessions with more than one therapist before deciding. It takes time to know, but there's a lot at stake and much to gain. In my practice, I've worked successfully with people suffering from depression and anxiety, grappling with life changes and decisions, and struggling in important relationships. My orientation strives to deepen insight and self-knowledge, identify entrenched and destructive patterns in life, and open up new ways of being and experience. My own research, writing and college-level teaching informs my sub-specialty in the psychology of religion and culture. I can engage and explore cultural, religious, or spiritual concerns of any orientation within therapy.
