What I do is shaped by what I want in a therapist. I want someone who is kind, sensitive, smart and attentive. But I want more than that. I also want an optimistic therapist who demonstrates curiosity and ingenuity. I want someone who will listen in a way that has them entering my story, witnessing what I describe, connecting it to other things they know about me. I want someone to give me the benefit of the doubt - but not be blindly affirming. I want a therapist to be a partner in finding solutions that fit me and my life. Mine is a solo practice. My service ethic is inspired by other entrepreneurs and the sort of qualities one might have expected from the doctor with the black bag who made house calls - prepared, credible and transparent - and interested to take the time to understand what you have to say. A lot of healthcare has gotten faster or available in more places but it may not be as individual - as uniquely personal. Talk therapy doesn't work like that. It can't.
