"Identity is a social achievement". We live the stories we've had told about us, connected in a web of relationships with both people & ideas. Some of these narratives add to our agency, our freedom of choice, while others pigeonhole us into categories that make it difficult to pursue our preferences. In times of need people turn to those who can best support & advocate for our preferred selves, over & against overwhelming problems. Most of the time these supports are part of our natural circles: family, friends, a church leader, the lady at the grocery checkout. Sometimes others are drawn in. I am another possible advocate, a Narrative Family Therapist. You might think of me as a "therapeutic biographer", teaming up with you as investigative co-reporters of problems besetting you & your supports, because I know as one wise man once said that "people are not problems, problems are problems". Through a conversational, appreciative interviewing style we will carefully & respectfully document the history of your relationship with this problem & co-research the exceptions & special knowledges & skills that may be invisible to you & others around you.
