Being a therapist has taught me that those who seek treatment are "stuck" in patterns of thinking, feeling and reacting that have not worked for them. Most know what the problem is, but not how to fix it. Would anyone take their car to someone who didn't understand automobiles, know all the mechanical strengths and weaknesses of a car? A good therapist is first and foremost a good detective, looking for clues that are not always apparent. Additionally, a quality therapist has an innate sense of what must change to eliminate the problem and a plan that will work for that client. Early on, I discovered depression to be the major focus of attention of clinicians. Yet anxiety is equally debilitating. Twice as many individuals presented with anxiety. I began to observe those who suffered with ADD/HD, OCD, PTSD, GAD, etc., and through the years I learned what worked and what didn't in treating anxiety. Working with couples, families and individuals has taught me that the clients I serve are the best judge of my effectiveness as a therapist. The consumer knows.
