People's lives seem like jigsaw puzzles with each piece representing incidents of significance; the intoxication of first love, the achievement in passing algebra, buying that first car, or facing the prospect of divorce. The challenge lies in that there is no picture on a box to help with putting one's life puzzle together. Only the shape of the pieces,the hues of color, and the notched edges of our puzzles are there to give us clues. Imagine what happens when the unexpected occurs and loss destroys the expectations we have for our outcomes. Then life becomes overwhelming. As a counselor specializing in grief and loss, I understand the frustration in wondering where to turn when losing a long-held vision. Gaps and ragged edges take the place of perfect plans and dreams for the future. Change may be the key to healing, but how does that happen? Perspective shifts occur over time through discussion and coaching, but no one can speed the process of grief, whether from death, illness, divorce, displacement, depression, job loss, or even the demise of a beloved pet. I will not remove mourning, but I may be able to offer a healing perspective.
