In my experience, a good fit between client and therapist coupled with a strong desire to change are the most salient factors in predicting success (the former is consistently validated by research). Establishing a safe atmosphere is also essential, and I work to create one with each client. My approach to therapy is supportive and strengths-based and combines mindfulness practices, humor, psychodynamic theory, narrative therapy, harm reduction strategies, and CBT. Since it is difficult to get a sense of a "fit" electronically, I speak with prospective clients briefly by phone before meeting. Doing so has been helpful as it offers clients a chance to ask questions and to get a sense of whether or not my approach overlaps with what they're looking for.
