Emotional disturbance often occurs in the arena of personal relationships-- the source of our greatest joys as well as our most profound disappointments and heartaches. Whether it be with family, friends, schoolmates, work colleagues, spouses, church members, etc, unresolved breaches can result in anxiety and depression. While there is no "one size fits all" approach to healing deep hurts, we know that avoiding and suppressing feelings only makes things worse. As human beings we have the ability to choose our way out of our pain, despite what has happened to us. I help clients exercise their choice to move forward. The Stanford Research Forgiveness Project is one of many places providing empirical evidence directly correlating improved mental, emotional, and physical health with resolution of grudges and past resentments. Uncovering origins, understanding what happened, and evaluating the costs/benefits of moving forward are key steps in the healing process. Since pain from the past does not stay in the past-- unless it is healed-- our choice to release it can create peace in the present; freedom from feelings of victimization; resolution of self-induced stress; increased ability to say "no"; greater emotional resiliency; less defensiveness, more openness to love.
