In my thirty years in this work, I have found that all clients have the capability to grow and change, but often life experiences have discouraged them from seeing their own potential. I offer a practically optimistic approach to the issues that trouble clients. Problems may be specific, calling for assessment, making choices, and learning new skills, or they may be more existential in nature, calling for greater self-understanding and acceptance. I act as guide, and as a caring witness to clients' steps toward their goals. With most clients I focus on relationship, regardless of whether it is couples, group, family or individual counseling. I do this because relationship is fundamental to humans, has a great power to harm and to heal, and all relationships reflect our relationship with ourselves. Many of my clients have internalized negative messages from life experiences. Often they tell me I have given them positive messages that they are able to internalize and use to meet life challenges. I see the practical changes clients need to make, and believe in their capacity to make them.
