About Us The Mental and Social Health Center provides counseling, self-advocacy coaching, social skills training, mindfulness training, and other related services for people with mental health disorders and neurodevelopmental syndromes, as well as for people who simply want to improve their lives or explore new possibilities. We use a combination of brief and in-depth therapeutic approaches, based on what is needed in a given situation. Generally, we start with immediate, practical issues when these are present, and then start discussion of more long range or existential issues once pressing situations are dealt with. We take a holistic approach, based on a combination of direct counseling and connecting people to other resources available in the local community. We use a variety of counseling approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), positive behavioral supports, and skills training. In addition to working with mental health issues traditionally addressed in therapy such as depression and anxiety, we also specialize in working with clients with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), learning disabilities, and ADHD. Our Therapists Michael and Betsy Shor provide counseling and related social work services to children, adults, families, and groups. Michael has his bachelor's degrees in psychology and in consciousness studies, and his master's degree in social work. He is a Licensed Graduate Social Worker. Michael uses a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, positive behavior supports, social skills development, advocacy coaching for parents, and self-advocacy coaching with clients. Michael specializes in working with clients with ASD and neurodevelopmental disorders. Betsy's work centers on a cognitive-behavioral and problem-solving approach, which she combines with addressing issues of life meaning; working with mindfulness and letting-go techniques; and mind-body activities. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), with a undergraduate degree is in sociology, and he Master's Degree in social work. She specializes in working with clients with depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, and PTSD. Betsy is trained in a number of techniques which she uses together with traditional counseling approaches. These include using HeartMath HRV coherence training, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and ILS (the Integrated Listening System). Autism Spectrum and Neurodevelopmental Services Our center is dedicated to providing high quality services to people with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, including children, adults, and their families. We use a holistic model, centered on cognitive-behavior approaches, positive behavior support, and helping clients obtain appropriate services from schools, agencies, and from other professionals. Our expertise stems from a combination of lived experience, professional experience, and substantial professional education. We take direct life experience in overcoming obstacles that come from living with ASD or from raising a child with ASD, and translate it into helping others in similar situations. We emphasize the development of strengths, while addressing difficulties that get in the way of growing in those areas. Areas of focus include social skills, self-advocacy skills for clients and families, sensory issues, access to appropriate education, vocational skills and transition to adulthood, and supporting the development of fulfilling social and romantic relationships.
