The first time meeting with a therapist is probably the most challenging and can provoke a certain amount of anxiety due to a number of factors. For example, wondering if the counselor will be a good fit and/or deciding if the individual is ready to commit to helping themselves. The most important aspect of therapy is to be honest with yourself and be open to personal challenge which generally leads to the behavioral changes that clients are seeking within themselves. Throughout my professional experience as a clinical social worker, I have enjoyed working with a variety of populations such as: veterans, developmental disabilities, mental illness, addictions, ADHD, grief/loss, couples, adults, families/children/adolescents, HIV/AIDS, LGBT/Transgender, Refugees, PTSD, and college level students. I use a client centered, strength-based approach in order to empower clients to identify answers to their problems within themselves.
