My practice is oriented towards helping men, young and old, face the challenges of being a man in today's world: learning to be emotionally intimate in relationships, balancing the demands of work and family, managing anger and other destructive impulses, learning to be a more involved and loving father, and finding one's true path in life. Beginning therapy is not easy for many men. I use my extensive experience in working with men to offer both the compassion and directness men need to find the courage within themselves to face these challenges. In my individual and couples therapy, I typically help men to confront their defenses and resolve grief and trauma issues which underlie the problems in their lives. I also facilitate four men's therapy groups which offer both the support and accountability necessary for sustaining these changes over time. My therapy is guided by over 30 years of experience with theory and research, having taught The Psychology of Men and Masculinity at UW-Madison, offered numerous workshops to other human service professionals, and serving on the editorial board for the primary journal in my field, Psychology of Men and Masculinity.
