In behavioral health, as in medicine generally, diagnosis drives the treatment. Therefore, it’s most important to start by doing a comprehensive, bio-psycho-social evaluation. The treatment plan should be equally comprehensive, addressing all the needs that the initial assessment reveals. I believe that treatment should be as parsimonious as possible. If psychotherapy alone is indicated, then that is what I’d recommend. If, however, your condition warrants treatment with medication (especially if you have an apparent genetic predisposition), then I’ll suggest psychopharmacotherapy, as well. We would review medication options and the risks and benefits of those options. Psychiatry addresses disorders of the mind/brain that affect how we function in society. It’s important to rule out possible medical causes of certain psychiatric disorder (e.g., with lab or other diagnostic tests). It’s also important to treat to remission, i.e., eliminating symptoms and optimizing functioning. Having gone to divinity school, I bring a humanistic approach to treating patients that is caring, respectful, and optimistic. We all face challenges in our lives. These can be springboards for growth, both for ourselves and in our relationships. I would be honored to assist you in making this happen.
