I introduce the possibility for change with my clients. I help them tell their story, both individuals and couples, and then help them connect the past with the present. I help them learn that some of things that they learned to survive their childhood do not translate well when we are in adult relationships. When we are able to make this connection, we are able to take ownership of our feelings and needs. With couples I introduce the tenets of Imago Relationship Therapy which will help them learn to listen to their spouses needs without forfeiting their own needs. My definition of Codependence is: not taking ownership of feelings and needs. There are many ways people avoid their feelings: controlling, fixing,isolating, raging, addictions, religiosity to name a few. I teach my clients about the difference in having a feeling (hurt) versus stuffing the hurt (resentment). I combine the feelings work with Imago Relationship Therapy. I have worked for 15 years with families whose family member is alcohol/addiction in-patient treatment. I have much experience with people seeking relief from pain, through addiction or codependency.
