"My approach to counseling is eclectic. To me that means that my ideas concerning human growth and development and my ideas concerning treatment strategies come from a variety of theories and practices. I see my primary counseling purpose as being one of assisting the client to achieve self-defined goals and to overcome problems that interfere with these goals. This process may involve problem-solving regarding specific current issues. It is likely to involve exploring past experiences to help understand how they have impacted personality development and/or habitual response patterns. My approach involves body/mind integration. Talk therapy can only get you so far, because it does not address deep-seated emotional states that are literally incorporated into the body. To heal at a deeper level, in my opinion, one must address the whole person in an individually-tailored manner. The adaptive information processing model provided by EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) informs my view of psychotherapy. The theory provided by interpersonal neurobiology helps to explain how humans grow and develop and either thrive or suffer. Therapeutic modalities utilized need to make sense in terms of these theoretical underpinnings.
