With a special interest in anxiety and depression spectrum disorders, I help clients explore how environmental factors (family, gender roles, work, ethnicity, economic situation, etc.) shape our adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms and patterns of response. Instead of focusing on "pathology" I explore clients' strengths and skills they already have to effect positive changes in their functioning and sense of well-being. I draw from a broad theoretical base to fit the individual treatment issues clients present, but I also use cognitive-behavioral strategies to complement supportive, insight-based therapy. Special training includes EMDR for intractable depression or anxiety related to PTSD.
