I'm a general psychiatrist providing individual, couples, and family psychotherapy. I also prescribe medication. I begin by trying to understand you as a person, and I'm convinced that you must feel understood. Problems most people face are the result of psychological, interpersonal and biological factors. These usually interact. After initial meetings, we decide how to proceed: perhaps psychotherapy, and we may or may not decide to use medication. Many of my patients have AD/HD, but I treat other problems. I actively pursue continuing education and teach medical students and psychiatry residents at the University of Pennsylvania. My basic orientation is self psychology. The cutting edge of psychoanalysis, it's changed both theory and treatment. Freud is respected, but we focus on how relationships shape our personalities, including the ones between patients and therapist (my patients and me). Sometimes, but not always, biology's important. Spirituality's often an important part of health. For a layman, I have pursued extensive religious education. I find this has made me a better therapist for people of all religious traditions, including agnostics and atheists. I'm a liberal Christian, but I will and must respect your faith tradition.
