I view the objective of psychotherapy as a way for people to acquire both the insights and direction they need in order to deal more effectively with their problems. I am goal-directed and my therapeutic goal is to bring about the changes that will enable my patients to either resolve or reduce their concerns in order to obtain more satisfaction in their lives. It is my belief that change is possible when we are highly motivated to change. I bring many years of experience to my practice. In addition to individual psychotherapy, I work with marital and family issues. Initially I seek to identify what may have caused, contributed,or maintains the difficulties a person is experiencing. I utilize both a psychodynamically-oriented and cognitive behavioral approach. Ultimately, I employ the strategy or strategies that I feel are needed to effectively accomplish agreed upon goals. I bring both academic experience and clinical training into my practice. I am a Professor Emeritus from the University of Maryland at College Park, where I was the Director of the graduate level School Counseling program from its inception to my retirement from the University.
